SMID.

/smɪt/ — Afrikaans, noun: blacksmith

A blacksmith does not guess. Heat, force, precision, test — then do it again until the thing holds.

That is engineering, and it is the whole idea behind this domain. smid.co.za is a South African workshop for software and hard problems: the sort that get taken apart, understood from first principles, and rebuilt into something that actually runs in the real world rather than in a slide deck.

Everything built here starts with a problem worth solving properly — a calculation nobody wants to do by hand, a decision made on bad data, a job that should take a minute and takes an afternoon. Some of what comes out is useful to other people. Some of it was built to find out whether it could be.

01 · Define
State the problem honestly, including what the data cannot answer.
02 · Work
First principles. Show the numbers behind the answer.
03 · Build
Fit for purpose. No moving parts that earn nothing.
04 · Test
Prove it against reality, then say what is still unknown.

“Ons smee oplossings.”

We forge solutions

This page is the front of the workshop, not an index of it. Nothing here to click, nowhere to sign up, nothing for sale. What gets built behind it goes out into the world under its own name.
